The International Conference on National Strategy of Electronic Records Management

The International Conference on National Strategy of Electronic Records Management was held in Shaw Conference Center at RUC on June 20, 2009. It was held by the School of Information Resource Management. The participants were the experts and scholars from America, Holland, Canada, and Australia. The leaders of the state archives bureau and provincial archives were also invited. The guests and the professors discussed the hot topics of electronic records together with the students in the conference. (See the news) Before the conference, Dyung Le, who is in charge of the design of American ERA system, and Dr. Chang, the software engineer of Adobe Quality Engineering Developer, were invited to make a speech. Asia and Pacific Conference on Archival Education(APCAE)

APCAE was held in Renmin University of China (RUC) in Beijing, in 17th-18th April, 2004. Entrusted by ICA/SAE, Archives College (AC, founded in1952, newly named as the School of Information Resource Management) in RUC organized the conference. Seventy experts and specialists from nine countries, including America, Australia, Britain, Germany, China, Japan, East Timor, New Zealand and Philippines, participated in the conference. The theme of the conference is “Communication Cooperation and Cross-influences: Developing Archival Education in Asia and Pacific Region in 21 Century

Topics are as following:

  • Archival Education and Training in information age
  • The interaction of teaching, research and application
  • International cooperation on archival education and training
  • Case study (curriculum development, teaching art, methodology and computer aided teaching etc.)

Dr.Feng Huiling, Vice-President of RUC, Dean of AC, SC member of ICA/SAE, made a welcome speech. She said: 21st century is such a period that Archival work needs to be innovated and developed. The most significant element which makes archival progress is to educate and train archivists. In the opening ceremony, Mr. Mao Fumin ,the Director General of State Archives Administration of China (SAAC) , Director of EASTICA , visiting professor of RUC made a congratulation speech, so did Karen Anderson-the president of ICA/SAE and Michael Hoyle-President of PARBICA.

The conference's subject- "Developing Archival Education in Asia and Pacific Region in the 21st Century" was widely discussed. "Good papers, lively discussion and a very open and warm atmosphere at the Conference", said Karen Anderson after conference. In the closing ceremony, Proposal for Enhancing Communication and Cooperation on Archival Education in Asia-Pacific Region was declared with English, Japanese and Chinese trilingual languages. All delegates agreed on the proposal and sincerely hope that APCAE will be held either regularly or occasionally in different countries or regions in the Asia-Pacific Area, which would definitely guarantee smoother communication, offer abundant opportunities for cooperation and thus benefit archivists greatly.

The International Seminar for Urban Development Archives (UDA)

The International Seminar for Urban Development Archives (UDA) was held in Hang Zhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province of China, from April 16 to 18, 2004. The topic of the seminar was "Evidence, Information and Memory: Research in Integrated Management and Services of Urban Development Records and Archives". It was organized by the Project Team of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Project number: 70273055), SIRM, the Professional Committee of Urban Development Archives and Information of the Chinese Society for Urban Studies, the Research Institute for Information Resource Management of Zhejiang University, and the Hang Zhou Urban Development Archives, and was supported by the National Science Foundation of China for International Exchange and Cooperation Projects.

Around 80 people attended the seminar, of whom 8 where from the UK,USA, Spain, New Zealand, and Switzerland; others came from urban development archives (UDA) repositories and administrations of 20 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government; from the Research Institute of the State Archives Administration, Renmin University, Zhejiang University, Tongji University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Branch School of Nanjing Political University, and Heibei University.

The seminar played an important role in evaluating the research progress of the "Research in Integrated Management and Integrated Services of Urban Development Records, Archives and Information" international research project. It promoted the wide application of international best practice and standards to China and at the same time ensure the contributions of the research are not just limited in China. The discussion brought ideas and experiences of different cultures, different disciplines and different sectors together to learn from each other. It provided an opportunity for Chinese archivists to learn more about the world and for foreign archivists to learn more about China. As Pierre Frey, the Chairman of the Architectural Records Section of the International Council on Archives (ICA/SAR) mentioned in the closing ceremony, the international seminar was a success, it had made great contributions to the field of architectural archives and urban development archives in the world.

The First PhD Forum on Archives

The First PhD Forum on Archives was held in RUC in Beijing, in 17th-18th April, 2001. Entrusted by ICA/SAE, Archives College in RUC organized the conference.The participation of many famous scholars made this forum the highest level of international forum on archives in the history of AC. The forum also evoked worldwide effect on archives. The famous foreign guests included Dr Luciana Duranti, chair of the InterPARES; Professor Michael Cook, who is highly regarded in archival academe; Professor David Bearman, expert on managing electronic records and so on. Dr Karen, chair of ICA/SAE and many other foreign scholars called and mailed to congratulate on the forum. During the forum,- Michael Cook, professor of Liverpool University, was engaged as visiting professor of AC and David Bearman, expert of electronic record, was presented the Chinese version of his book "Electronic Evidence"  which was translated by the teachers and students of AC. The conference papers, materials, reports, on- the-spot communication translations were all finished by the teachers and students of AC. After the forum and lectures, the teachers and students of AC showed visitors the reference room and laboratory. The educational scale, communicating enthusiasm, good English and high specialty research theory of AC had left good impression on visitors. The experts demonstrated that they will use every opportunity to propagandize the achievement of archival research of AC and present more books to AC. The Association of American Archivists, the Association of Canadian Archivists and UNESCO also reported the AC in publications and websites.

The 8th International Symposium on Archival Education and Training

In 1996, AC and ICA/SAE held the 8th International Symposium on Archival Education and Training. The ICA/SAE addresses its sincerest thanks to the Archives College of Renmin University of China for its contribution to the success of the Eighth International Symposium on Archival Education. The ICA/SAE expresses its warmest thanks to Professor Cao Xichen, Principal, Archives College; Professor Han Yumei; Professor Feng Huiling, Dean, Archives Department, Archives College; and Associate Professors Gong Xiaodong, An Xiaomi, and Ding Zhimin for the perfect organization and efficient running of the Symposium. For the fine exhibition describing the Archives College of Renmin University of China, which is the largest program for education in archival enterprise in the world, the ICA/SAE extends a special appreciation to all who participated in developing and mou nting the exhibit, especially to Lecturer Wang Jian, Associate Professor Zheng Xiaohua, and Lecturer Huang Gui Su. Members of the ICA/SAE wish especially to extend their deep appreciation to the students of the Archives College of Renmin University of China for the warm hospitality they have shown, and we look forward to welcoming them in the coming years into the ranks of practicing archivists and archival educators.

Attending International Conferences

The 9th European Conference on E-Government

From June 20 to 29, 2009, the 9th ECEG was held in Westminster University Business School in London. Liu Yuenan, the associate professor of the School of IRM addressed the meeting. The speech was about the cooperated paper “The Challenge of E-Government: Management of Electronic Records in China” (cooperated with Professor Feng and Professor An). (See more)

The 22nd Work Meeting of ISO/TC46/SC11

The 22nd ISO/TC46/SC11 Work Meeting and the ISO/TC46 Work Meeting were held in Nairobi, Kenya from May 11th to 15th, 2009. More than 80 deputies from 17 countries took part in the meeting. An Xiaomi, the professor of school of IRM, as the number of Chinese delegation attended the conference. She was not only in charge of the terminology program of ISO/TC46/SC11 WG8, but was named as the secretary supporter of ISO/TC46/SC11.

The 15th International Congress on Archives

In August, 2004, Professor Hu Hongjie and Professor Wang Jian, Vice Professor An Xiaomi and PhD candidates Zhang Ning attended the 15th International Congress on Archives in Vienna, Austria.

In the congress, the achievement "Directory of Archival Education & Training Institutions(2000-2004)" the key project of ICA/SAE undertook by AC as the representative of China was submitted and showed in the congress and gained the consistent praise.

Professor Wang Jian was elected committee member (2004-2008)of ICA/SAE. In the congress, she presented the achievements of the international project and seminar assumed by China and made presentations on "Look at the International Cooperation on Archival Education from Directory of Archival Education & Training Institutions","Achievement Summary of 2004 Asia and Pacific Conference on Archival Education".

Professor Hu Hongjie made presentation on "Basic Status and functional analyses of China Archives Journals" in topic conference "The Power of Knowledge and Memory".

The 14th International Congress on Archives

In August, 2000, Professor Feng Huiling took part in the 14th International Congress on Archives. During the conference, Professor Feng Huiling and Associate Professor Wang Jian were elected members of ICA/SAE, and undertook research projects committed by ICA/SAE "Directory of Archival Education & Training Institutions" AC teachers joined 8 committees of ICA as following:

The 13th International Congress on Archives

In 1996, the 13th International Congress on Archives was held in Beijing. This was the first International Congress on Archives held in China, and also the first International Congress on Archives held in developing Country. Professor Feng Huiling was the first Chinese member of Section for Archival Education and Training(ICA/SAE)and she represented China to make presentation on "Evaluate Archival Works? An Xiaomi gave a presentation on". Traditional Archives Preservation Techniques: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead?at the Pre-Congress of the Thirteenth International Congress on Archives, held in Beijing on August 28, 1996.<>

The 12th International Congress on Archives

In 1992, Professor LI Hongjian, teacher XIE Ming represented AC attended the 12th International Congress on Archives for the first time.

Associate Professor An Xiaomi attended the 12th International Architecture& Museum Conference in Venice, Italy.

Associate Professor An Xiaomi attended the 1st International Architectural Archives Conference in Madrid, Spain, and made presentation on "Management of Architectural Archives in Digital Age: Prime Research on Integrated Management Patten".

2002

Professor Feng Huiling, Vice-President of RUC, Dean of SIRM went to Australia and signed cooperation Memorandum with Edith Cowan University in Australia and discussed deeply on the cooperation between Edith Cowan University in Australia and RUC on Archival specialty.

As SC members of ICA/SAE , Professors Feng Huiling and Wang Jian attended ICA/SAE Conference in Australia and made presentation on "Dancing with Bit——Research Focuses on China Archival Science in Digital Age".

Associate Professor An Xiaomi attended the 11th International Architecture& Museum Conference in Vienna, Austria.

With the invitation of National Literature School of Japan, Professors Feng Huiling and Zhao Guojun attended "Archival Science in China, Japan and Korea Seminar" and made presentation on "Archival Science In the Information Age" which was highly praised.

2001

Associate Professor Zhou Xiaoying went to America and Canada to attend the seminar held by International Library Union.

Associate Professor Wang Jian, SC member of ICA/SAE, attended the ICA/SAE Conference and European Archival Education Seminar in Germany and made presentation on "Archives in China" for the doctorate students in School of Information Resource Management, Marburg, Germany.

Teacher Liu Yuenan attended Southeast Asian Regional Branch of ICA (SARBICA) in Korea, and made presentation on "Retrieval and Utilization of electronic Records".

Teachers Feng Huiling, Wang Jian, Yu Lijuan and Liu Yuenan attended "InterPARES International Symposium".

2000

Professor Feng Huiling attended "Foundation of Korea Document Management Association & International Seminar" in Korea and made presentation on "Present Situation and Developing Tendency of China Archival Science".

Professor Chen Zhiwei visited Italy National Archives with "China Archives Delegation".

Professor Wang Chuanyu visited Japan with "Enterprise Archives working Delegatio" of China Archives Association and made presentation on "Appraisal of New China Archives".

1999

Professor Feng Huiling, Dean of SIRM, SC member of ICA/SAE attended the ICA/SAE Conference in Israel.

An Qingfu, Wang Dan and other two teachers attended "Archives and Beijing History International Seminar".

Teacher Yu Lijuan attended "Archives and Law International Seminar" in Guangzhou.
